Paintings: Seeing the Mountain (见山) and Seeing the Water (见水)
These two words are from a famous quote by QingYuanXingSi, a Zen Buddhist monk during the Tang dynasty. The quote illustrates the evolution of a practitioner's understanding of the world and the nature of reality as they progress on their spiritual journey.
1. "Thirty years ago, when the old monk had not yet practiced Chan (Zen), he saw the mountain as a mountain and the water as water."
Before practicing Zen, the monk sees things in their most basic, ordinary way.
2. "Later, after the monk had met a teacher and began to practice, he came to a place where he saw that the mountain was not a mountain, and the water was not water."
Through Zen practice, the monk comes to realize the illusory nature of things and transcends conventional perceptions.
3. "Now, having reached a resting place, the monk again sees the mountain as just a mountain, and the water as just water."
After enlightenment, the monk returns to perceiving the world with clarity, seeing things as they truly are, without attachment or illusion—mountains are just mountains, and water is just water, but now with a deeper, more enlightened understanding.
In Zen Buddhism, this is a reflection of the return to simplicity and direct experience after going through the deep stages of realization and understanding. The seeming paradox ("seeing the mountain as not a mountain") points to the experience of the world without conceptual overlays, before returning to a clear and unclouded view of reality.
