~ARTWORK DETAILS~
Title of Artwork: Timeless Camellia
Description: A graceful camellia in bloom, symbolizing love, admiration, and beauty—paired with elegant calligraphy for added depth.
Calligraphy Meaning & Background: "花将色不染,水与心俱闲" can be translated as: “The flower's color remains unstained; the water and the heart are both at ease.”
It comes from the poem 《同族侄评事黯游昌禅师山池二首》 (Two Poems for My Kinsman, Censor An, on Visiting the Mountain Pond of Zen Master Chang), attributed to Li Bai (李白), the renowned Tang dynasty poet known as the “Poet Immortal” (诗仙).
Li Bai composed these two poems to describe his visit to Zen Master Chang. It captures a moment of deep peace and meditation. The flower, remaining unstained in its color, symbolizes purity and natural beauty, untouched by worldly dust or artifice. The water, flowing or resting in calm, reflects the tranquil state of the mind. Together, they suggest a harmonious unity between the external world and inner consciousness, echoing themes common in Chan (Zen) Buddhist thought—stillness, detachment, and clarity.
